We are long time chicken folks and have always raised Buff Orpingtons. Because of the pandemic we had to use Hoover Hatchery, which was new to us. Our buffs in this batch are terribly, horribly aggressive. Has anyone else had this issue?

thanks!

Only time my girls are mean, is when they're in the nesting box.

I have a Buff Orpington named Henri that I bought from a local breeder at one week old. She's 6 months old now and just starting laying few days ago. I only have 2 birds in my flock that are ok with being held and she is one of them.

Henri does give us issues sometimes with the pecking order. She was at one point always going after my Australorp Raven and my Dominique Daisy. Her demeanor is not too bad this week and I think it's because she's laying now.

I have seen many comments about how Buffs are very sweet towards humans but absolute buttheads to other chickens. ;)

I got three BO straight run that ended up being all cockerels. I had to cull two at four months when hormones kicked in and they became unholy terrors to me and the three (Black Australorp) pullets. The cockerel I have left is.... ok. I really want 3-4 more chicks this spring, and they will be Australorps, blue if I can get them, or else black.

I'm wondering if BO were so popular that hatcheries just pumped them out. Like puppy mills will do with a popular breed.

If I do try BOs again in the future, I may search for a breeder for the chicks.

Knowing more about your .....

your flock size(numbers, ages, genders),

your coop(size in feet by feet with pics),

and what and how exactly you are feeding,

might offer clues to if there is a solvable problem.

We got 300 Buffs in September, which is an average number for us. Our son has an egg business and we sell pastured whole chickens from our farm so we often order 300-500 at a time.
we are feeding the same feed we always feed and they are in the same tractors we always use with less in each tractor (For instance when we run broilers in the tractors we have 100-105 in each tractor. We have 75 buffs in the tractors now). Literally the only change we have to the entire operation is the hatchery And their personalities.
We’ve had buffs for 10 years and have raised thousands of chickens on our farm. We’ve never had issues like this.
