My vet just prescribed Albon (sulfadimethoxine) to treat my flock of 9 1 chickens (1 year old) for severe coccidiosis. I did a little reading up on it and there were cautions about using it because it is unclear how long it stays in their systems since it can cause crystals in their urine and can continue to have residue in their eggs. So I’m concerned about a lifetime egg withdrawal. We love to eat fresh organic eggs from our flock and I’m concerned about giving it to them, does anyone have any experience using it and/or would you recommend using a different drug to treat?

sulfa is eliminated quickly. it has a half life of 12 hours. I prefer baycox for severe coccidiosis because sulfa is an antibiotic that kills good gut bacteria. they should have probiotics after treatment.

Thanks for the info! This is what my vet gave so unfortunately I have to go with this. Can I give probiotics while they are in the antibiotic or do I have to wait until after?

You can give probiotics during and after antibiotics. Many chicken feeds have probiotics listed on the label. Albon is used by many vets to treat coccidiosis because some strains of coccidiosis are resistant to amproliium (Corid.) In fact most people give sulfa drugs when chicks don’t respond to Corid. Sulfa drugs should be given exactly as directed because they can be hard on kidneys. Bactrim, a common drug used in humans for many infections is similar to Albon (sulfadimethoxine.) With any antibiotic it makes sense to wait a couple of weeks to eat eggs.

Thanks for your input, it’s very helpful! So one of my hens is also on Clavamox and Meloxadyl for egg yolk peritonitis, (she was laying internally, she’s my favorite chicken btw) which made her really sick (the peritonitis, not the meds). My vet says it’s fine for her to be on both but I’m concerned it’s too much for her. Her stool was tested separately from the rest of the flock and it wasn’t positive for coccidiosis but I know the whole flock should be treated. The coccidiosis treatment is 5 days while she gave her a month’s worth of treatment on the clavamox. It all seems like too much for her (the drugs together and the month on clavamox). Is it ok to give her all this at once?
