My rhode island red hens started laying eggs last week. I got them from TSC in the fall. They've been great but I've noticed some of them look spotted in color. I just want to make sure it's not something I'm doing wrong. All the other hens have nornal looking eggs. This is the 5th or 6th egg I've seen from the RIR like this.

What you're getting with the splotchy eggs is an exceptionally heavy bloom. That actually washes off if you wish. The bloom, however, helps keep an egg fresh for months without refrigeration if left intact.

You aren't doing anything wrong. It's merely an individual quirk of the hen laying the egg.
Thank you!!

Gorgeous eggs, good question!

Check out this article to see how eggs are formed and a number of possible things that can go awry along with some possible causes..

As mentioned by the first poster.. bloom extends freshness and quality.. and should be preserved if possible rather than washed off.

Although unwashed egg safety stored at room temperature may be fine, quality declines rapidly.. just less rapid than washed.
