HI ALL
I called in a order today for 25 La Fleche chicks from Ideal Hatchery. They are due to be shipped March 10. If anyone has order La Fleche from Ideal Hatchery in the past please post pictures.
I am bumping this up because I am have been searching high and low for a breeder of these stunning chickens. I have searched breeders and hatcheries that I have seen mentioned on this site but they seemed to be old posts and I did not see them mentioned on the websites. Any help would be gratefully appreciated!
I just raised 15 La Fleche from Ideal as capons. The birds arrived healthy and thrived here in SC. Sadly I lost most of them to predation by a string of dog attacks, as well as several when I tried to mix them in with my laying flock. The remaining birds are doing well and look just as they shou. Mind you they are not "show quality" but they were never advertised as such either. I probably wouldnt go with them again as meat birds due to very slow growth, but thats not a hatchery issue.
Thank you for sharing your information! What are the personalities like? Did they do ok in the heat because I too am in SC and we got HOT here this summer, right? Is there another breeder that you would recommend other than Ideal? I intend to breed them, if they are suitable. I made up my mind to raise two heritage breeds and my first pick was the Jubilee Orpington, second is possible the La Fleche.
The birds did okay with the heat - I did have misters on them during that crazy hot part of June. The rain and damp seemed to be a bigger problem for them as several "caught cold". I never found out if it was anything more serious with them, while several of them became somewhat sick and lethargic, when I placed them in quarentine they were attacked and killed by a pack of dogs (I am a terrible fence builder). Several other birds of differnt breeds also became sick during the same period, but "shook it off".
Wow. High maintenance birds! Goodness..makes me rethink...I appreciate you taking the time to share that! Perhaps I will look into another heritage breed to support and just get a couple of the La Fleche for my own little pet flock.
BTW, electric fencing has been a great thing for my flock protection. I have draft horses and I draw my electric from their fence to the wires around the lower part of my chicken fence. I have not (to date) had a loss. It makes the predators think twice, LOL!!
