I met a woman today who used to work at a rescue place...and she said that they never fed tomatoes to their ducks. Anyone have any information on this? I give my ducks tomatoes and lettuce every day. Anyone have information that I shouldn't do this? They do love their tomatoes!

Sometimes, yes they can cause intestinal duress. I know, I can't eat tomatoes.

I'd be cautious, but if they love them and don't seem to have a problem, then they should be fine.

Mine won't eat anything red

But some folks regularly feed their ducks a little bit of tomato and they do fine. I agree with dotknott, just like us, they can be okay or have a reaction to food.

When introducing foods, I generally proceed with caution - offer a little bit, watch for several minutes, and keep an eye on everyone and their poop for the day. I read up ahead of time, but one can get severely confused with so many people saying "absolutely not!" and others saying "it's great for them!"

Mine go insane for tomatoes. They will chase each other for each piece. They got into my garden several times last year to steal them right off the vines...and eat the leaves. They are still fat and healthy and I think the fear about tomato plants has been overblown.

I was told the fruit itself is okay, but the stems and leaves are toxic. Dunno if that's true or not, but my toddlers love tomatoes :)
