I finally figured out that I’m allergic to my chickens when I touch them. I’ve had a horrible scaly oozing painful rash on both hands and wrists for nearly 9 months before it dawned on me that the rash appeared within a day or two of getting my first baby chicks last year. The rash gets much worse within minutes of touching or holding a chicken. I’ve been wearing gloves religiously every time I go out to the yard now but I still have the rash always. The only time it went away was when I took a 5 day vacation and wasn’t around my girls or my home. I can’t imagine either giving up my girls or never feeling their feathers again

I’ve been to doctors and tried dozens of creams, and oils like lavender, tea tree, and frankincense but nothing works. Anyone else deal with this? Any solutions anyone has found?

Steroids might clear it up. Go to an allergist, may be able to help you desensitize to it.

Did you ever find a solution? We never had a problem with our last chickens, but since we got baby chicks, my daughters hands have broken out into a terrible dermatitis rash. They don't want to give up holding the chicks. Is this just an allergy to the chicks, or could there be mites? We got them from a feedstore, when they were just a couple of days old.
