Hi all. My hen, Ginger is a Red Star with apparent Peritonitis. (Broken egg at vent, lethargic, yellow discharge) I see Baytril is the antibiotic for this, but I can’t get to the vet til tomorrow. Right now, I have Tylan, DoxyTyl, and Denagard. Can any of those be subbed until my appointment tomorrow?

Treatment so far,
1. Epsom salt bath
2. Tums calcium to the beak
3. Water based lube to ease passage of the shell.

Question: what is a good substitute antibiotic until vet visits?
Any other suggestions welcome.

Is her vent wide open like the picture shows? Amoxicillin could be substituted temporarily, but most vets won’t prescribe Baytril since it is banned by the FDA. Some will as ling as you promise to never eat the eggs or use the meat. I’m sorry that your hen is doing poorly. The calcium in Tums or calcium tablet with vitamin d can help her pass any more eggs. Have you ever seen any lash eggs or lash material? Are her urates in her droppings yellow or white?

Vent no longer has shell coming out. She looks better. I have been seeing soft shells for a week or two, but I’ve seen them lay soft shells before. The discharge is yellow. Don’t have amoxicillin now. I have doxytyl and Tylan. Giving collodial silver now . I have a vet appointment tomorrow. I think another chicken has this too. They were crowded in a run for a bit bc of a coyote visiting

You could use one of those, but they are normally used for respiratory disease (MG) and tylan is sometimes used for enteritis, an intestinal infection. Since you have seen soft shells, I would give her 300-600 mg of calcium with vitamin d3 for up to 7 days. That way you can see if it helps her shells, and if not, it could be a shell gland problem in the oviduct.

Thanks much!
