I read somewhere that given the girls some meat to eat will help discourage bordem picking....so was going to try tonights dinner...Pork steak....
What do you think????

Ours love pork.

They don't get it often, maybe once a month, if they're lucky. We also give them the occassional beef and seafood...they act like they've died and gone to heaven.

We have Banties so I cut/chop it all up real small for them.

Hope this helps!

:Chickens in the wild eat

seed/grain/nuts,
green feeds/fruit
and meat, normally as insects/grubs/carrion.

Domestic chickens havent left that behind in the few centuries they've been around.

In general, anything you eat that you consider healthy for you will be alright for your chickens. Pork is fine, if cooked properly.
Whether meat wil discourage boredom picking is another matter. I rather doubt it. The cure for boredom is activity.

I don't fix it for them on purpose, but I throw all my leftovers/scraps out to the animals and the chooks, cats, and dog all fight for what they want. The dog usually wins, the chooks are second, and the poor cats get whatever is left.

Every single person here as. Since the BSE crisis, ruminants are no longer (or maybe rarely) used for the protein meal in your chicken feed. So the industry converted to porcine meal.

So unless you are feeding a vegetarian feed, we have all fed pork to our chickens.

Our girls get our table scraps, so yes, they've gotten pork in just about all forms at one time or another, along with beef, fish and shellfish.

They absolutely love it, but I don't know that it does anything for boredom picking. Ours don't pick at each other, but I think that's more because they have lots of room to run, not because of what we feed them.

Mine eat all kinds of table scraps. The only stuff I don't give them is really salty foods. Those are reserved for the pig. Oh, and the dog usually takes care of the scraps from my two small boys that hit the floor.
