Among a host of other things that I am curious about, I was wondering if anyone uses the automatic, heat activated window openers like the ones sold at Lee Valley to open their windows? Mine tilt in from the top, just pivot on the slanted base at the bottom. These window openers would be perfect....I think. They run about $50 a piece plus shipping, anyone know of anywhere else they can be bought cheaper?

They work well for coldframes, I can't see why they wouldn't function well for coop windows too...

...BUT remember that they won't open the window very FAR. This is enough if you are just worried about overheating a coldframe, and might be useful if you have a small very solar-heated coop in wintertime, but I honestly do not believe the amount of opening you're going to get will make any great difference during a typical person's summertime.

So, I guess I'd ask, is there a particular situation-specific *reason* to want to use them (a particular reason to want windows opened/closed slightly at circa 60-80 F), or is it just a neat sounding gizmo

(e.t.a. - They just do cost about $50, whether bought from lee valley or from a greenhouse or gardening supply place)

I was thinking that they might work for us on our 2 large tilt in windows. They only tilt in about a foot at the most to begin with. The coop heats up because of them quite early in the morning, as soon as the sun rises and I would like to have them open up before I get a chance to get out and open up the rest of the vents.

I have 14 little ones with brooder lights on them in there as well and that is not helping with the heat first thing in the morning. I turn them off during the day if it's too hot. I have been keeping the windows and vents closed at night to conserve heat for them, it seems it's either too hot or too cold depending on the time of day. A lot of it is being lazy and not getting out to the coop in time. These actually don't work well in the winter, they suggest to remove them during the winter months. Plus, I like gadgets

Michiganlarry, can you tell me where you purchased yours? There are less expensive ones on ebay but I don't want to buy junk either.

Thanks!
