Random question, but I have been offered some free hellebores from an neighbour, and i was wondering whether they were poisonous to
chickens?
I googled it and couldn’t find an answer.

TIA!

Since they contain harmful substances in every part of the plant, hens are poisoned by hellebores (Helleborus species). Symptoms of consuming hellebores include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramping in the abdomen, burning in the mouth and throat, nervousness, and maybe sadness. Ingesting huge amounts can be lethal.

My google search turned up lots of toxicity claims. The following quote was taken from the link to cornell university that follows it..

"All Helleborus sp. are claimed to be toxic."

My google search results for more links to review..

We have lilies in our chicken run. Lilies are toxic to chickens, but guess what? The chickens don't eat the lilies! They snuggle under them for shade, scratch around them for bugs and poop all around them. They love the lilies and the lilies love the chickens. I'm sure there's plenty in the big wide world where they free range that's toxic to them as well, but it seems they know what's safe to eat and what to avoid. At least, what's safe that grows. Keep them away from styrofoam though, they love that. And they will stupidly eat nails and screws and things like that. 🙄

We already have them in our garden, and they've never had a problem so far! Lol

I was very concerned about this when I first got my girls too, but I have found that they really don’t snack on anything that is dangerous. Maybe a tiny taste when they first discover, but they spit it out in disgust hah! They’re smart little things. Of course, there’s always an exception - if they’re bored and there is nothing else to do or eat, they might mess with toxic plants. Hopefully your run is stimulating and they have lots to do.
