I think I will purchase a few ducklings but they MUST be friendly. I don't want pekins, even though i hear they're great, I just want to get something a litle different that is friendly and will imprint on humans. So can anybody tell me about these ducks or the Blue swedish?

I currently have 24 2 week old ducklings. In the group we have a Rouen, 3 Pekin, 2 Swedish Blues, 4 khaki campbells, 4 crested buffs, 6 Magpies, and 4 indian runners. The most affectionate duck is a Pekin, followed by some of the crested buffs and the indian runners. The Magpies are neither here nor there, but the Swedish blues and khaki campbells are the most squirrely...and HATE to be handled. Of course this is just my experience! I've had some adult swedish blues that we used for herding and never really clicked with them. I also had calls and they were WONDERFUL. Out of this group I think we'll keep the Pekins and maybe the Rouen...it's pretty personable as well. I won't be able to use them for herding, but my daughter is in love and they're pretty fond of her as well. The rest will all go to my friend's farm to wander free range and occassionally consent to be herded.

Then Maybe I'll get a buff. I hear all around that the peking is the msot affectionate but I don't want a white duck. There are so many kinds i'm just completely befuddled:p

Yeah ...I have khaki campbells and cayugas and the cayugas are certainly more friendly than the khakis. The cayugas dont really like to be held but they withstand it...the khakis will be still when you hold them but they do not want to get caught!

My Cayuga drake is my most friendly duck. Then probably my Pekin.
Then my Rouens, although my hen is more friendly than my drake. Then my Swedish followed by my Khaki and then my Indian Runner is the end of the line. The Khaki and Runner are only about three months old though and the rest are all over a year.

Just wondering...is the only way to tell the sex of a cayuga duck by looking at the tail feather since they are all black?

I have a pekin, crested white, and a runner.
I love all of them.
The pekin was extremely friendly from the start, even though it was a three-day old when I got it.
The crested white is very sweet and calm.
My runner is a cuddle-bunny. Probably the most outwardly affectionate, and fearless! (but both it and my crested were hatched by me).
I have also heard good things about welsh harlequins and muscovies.
Would not get a khaki if you want friendly--I think they are usually fairly skittish.
Oh, and just for the record, my emden goose is my favorite. She still thinks she is a lap goose, and loves to talk to me

Wow all these ducks sound so great I'm thinking about ordering from ideal so now i'm just looking at their selection of ducks and i'm leaning towards the cayuga or the blue swedish

I loved my Blue swed drake. He was the sweetest baby boy! We used to "launch the skittles". Which was walk out in the pasture with him on my shoulder then launching him into the air for him to fly back home. He would wait by the fence to be let in, grab a drink, and then quack to be held.
