my husband got 13 muscovies this week, 9 of which are ducklings. all the adults are mostly black, including the drake. i am wondering if the 2 light colored ducklings are actually muscovies? can they be yellow instead of black?

They can be. My computer is acting up so I wasn't able to blow up the pic. They do look muscovyish. Do they have the bean at the tip of their bills? My first thought was Pekin but upon looking longer, I'd say they are muscovy or muscovy cross.

It is unlikely that they are fully related to the darker ducklings. I have all barred muscovy, chocolate and black, and my ducklings all hatch yellow with colored butts. If you have any pied, then they will throw more coloring in their ducklings.

Did the people he got them from have more and different colored muscovy or other mallard derived breeds?

Regardless, nice looking group. Congrats.

i'm not sure what the bean at the tip of their bill is supposed to be??

i think the person he got them from only had muscovies. they may have had lighter colored drakes, i do not know. i know they had other drakes, so another one might be the dad. my 4 adults are all the same coloration as the mom above (what is that color called?)

Sorry. The bean is the little tip on the end of the upper bill. In muscovy, this is larger than in other breeds. I'd say they are all muscovy then. Muscovy are notorious for changing coloration as they grow.

For instance: mine are barred and all of my babies hatch like this.

These are my foundation stock. The drake is on the right. Still very barred. This was just after I got them, they were about 4-5 months old.

This is the same drake about 5 months later. Now, about 6 months later, he looks more chocolate but he has still not molted. All of the babies in this pic are his, and all black barred.

So, it is possible to get lighter colored ducklings out of darker parents but the ducklings will likely darken. I still don't think the lighter are 100% related to the darker ducklings but that is good for you if you plan on breeding.

I have muscovies as well... I do have a solid white with blue eyes and have had somewhat solid white without blue eyes and she was solid yellow when she was a duckling
by the way, my drake is a blue pied

this is Aflac, solid white hen with blue eyes, at least she was solid white last year, she has some blue on her this year. It`s so weird how sometimes this ducks change their color
