Are these lice/mites? Best course for treatment?

Hey all,

I hope everyone is heading into the festive season with no issues and looking forward to some downtime.

We've done our regular checks on our girls tonight and found that they have these 'bugs' by their vents. They're not visible elsewhere but are quite abundant by their vents. Anyone know if they're lice or mites? We've dealt with mites before but these look different.

We've given them all some "pour on" ivermectin just to be on the safe side and will re-treat in 10 days, but wasn't sure if that was the best course of action or whether we need to treat with something else.

Thanks in advance.

I"m not sure what those are. They're rather large. On the right it almost looks like woodticks. Regardless, I'd treat them.

The vast majority use permethrin/garden powder. Some I've heard put it in an old sock and softly beat their chickens with it. The important thing is to get it on them everywhere, especially under the wings and butt. Then when they're done, do the coop and nesting boxes too. If you can clean the entire coop out, haul it away and burn it.

Repeat treating the chickens and the coop in 10 days as it won't kill the eggs that could hatch on them a week later.

They look like Poultry Lice to me.

You can find Permethrin Poultry Dust at TSC. Put the dust into an old sock and use that like a powder puff, tap the sock all over the bird working the through the feathers all the way to the skin. Repeat dusting in 7 day intervals.

Treating housing with a Permethrin based poultry spray would be good to do. Spray will treat larger areas and you can get it into nooks/crannies. Be sure to clean out nesting boxes, treat those and spray your roosting bars too.

Ivermectin is helpful in treating Poultry Mites since the mites feed on blood, but it's not very effective in treating Lice (Louse) since those mainly feed on feather debris, skin, etc.

As far as I know you should be able to use the poultry dust with the Ivermectin.

The girls will be fine LOL They will be much more comfy after you dust them.
If you need to, wait until they are roosting, then go out and lift each one of the roost, dust her and put her back on the roost. This way it's easy to catch them.

Here's the best photos I can get, but I'm relatively sure that it's lice from the photos!

We've managed to get pestene, a spray with pemethrin and we just need to get new bedding for the coop then we'll treat them all properly to get rid of them!

Thanks to all for their help/feedback.

There's one that's an Araucana and I swear to you I've never dealt with an animal so dramatic! It's going to be a good laugh trying to treat her because she will literally scream bloody murder :p

Those are some big lice from what I've seen! I hope you don't mind but I'm saving these last two pictures for future reference for myself or others. Your lice I think actually have teeth! :gig

What you're doing will most definitely do the trick!

If you have a recurring problem, after you have new bedding, kick the chickens out and sprinkle FSL (First Sat. Lime) or food-grade diatomaceous earth all over the floor and nest boxes monthly. We've done the latter for years as we have free-ranging chickens where the wild bird feeders are so know they'd be picking up lots of little critters from them, but don't.

Pestene should take care of them.

Oh, you've got a crazy hen! I've had a few of those, they do get over it if they get some kind of treat😂

wyorp...you mentioned using Ivermectin (may I ask if you happen to know the dosage and instruction for the giving the injectable form (but in any manner besides injection?) and Elector PSP... Excessive and I had a thread we were discussing she had broken it down to I believe 700 ml or something like that for the PSP mixture and I can't seem to find the thread anywhere I looked in my dick bookmarks past messages I even did searches multiple times on the main page of this app and still can't seem to find it... So perhaps you can help me figure out what it is or direct me in the correct place to find that breakdown of I'm almost positive she had calculated it out giving the 700 or 750 ml? Thank you in advance for your time.
