“Gov. Katie Hobbs has signed into law House Bill 2325, which prevents a city from making an ordinance that bans backyard chickens at a single-family home.

The bill allows residents to have up to six chickens in their backyard. The coop, which must be cleaned twice a week, can be a maximum of 200 square feet and up to 8 feet high.”

No roosters allowed. Hobbs signed the bill on May 21, and it takes effect 90 days from that date.

After the 90 days, us city people can have backyard chickens in Arizona… legally 😂

The town meeting is next Tues 8/20/24.
Once downloaded, the ordinance regarding fowl (and rodents) starts on pg 39 of 1037. So discouraging!

Before I built the coop, I asked my neighbors if they minded. They did not object and said that dogs are much noisier than chickens.

The info I read said roosters are allowed as long as they are not noisy LOL So I guess they will send someone out to see how noisy they are. That's just a strange thing to put in the ordinance because it's relative. I do believe the coop has to be a certain amount of feet away from your neighbors home so that may limit some people because AZ has allowed subdivisions to pack them in with only 10 feet to fence line. Thank goodness I live in an unincorporated part of Maricopa county and I can have all the chickens I like plus my horses!! Oh and I'm sure the HOA's will do everything possible to stop them from getting chickens so it probably will not help most people in AZ but may help some that live in older homes not in an HOA subdivision.

I live in Mesa and I only have a 5000 square foot lot. I can't find anything anywhere about the minimum lot size in Mesa. Can anyone tell me what it is?

I live alone and only need one or two eggs a day on average, so probably could get by fine with 3 or 4 chickens.
