We have tried several times to create a pvc auto waterer with chicken nipples, but it just is not working.

I would like to buy a tripod waterer and add a float (the same float we use for our auto dog waterer, so I know it works) to the inside of this store bought waterer. Any reason you can see that it won't work?

This will connect directly to a regular water hose with a valve to slow the pressure during the summer. During the winter we'll switch it to attach to a large water cistern that will be inside the coop to prevent freezing.

Not sure how much your dog waterer valve set you back?? but you can achieve same with a toilet tank valve. These are really reasonably priced. No need to have a pressure regulator with this.

I have seen similar setups using a 5 gallon plastic water bucket,, with ether a PVC pipe with nipples, or horizontal nipples on exterior of bucket.
Nipples work well since the pressure is only gravity,, and not hose service pressure.

WISHING YOU BEST,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and :welcome
