Hello,
I've raised chickens in a cheap tractor supply copp for a few years now and wanted to upgrade and build my own and was hoping someone would know the average cost it takes to build one these days?....I just got some more chickens and now I have 12....

That completely depends on your starting point and what you want it to look like. Have you considered a shed to coop conversion?

Price can vary greatly based on size and choice of material. Here we have manufacturers that produce tin. We can get slightly bent pieces directly from them very cheap. We also have sawmills we can get boards from. I would check around your local area to see what you can find. Also places like lowes and home depot etc... have websites with pricing. You can simply make a blueprint, then look up the price of materials at several places. Thats what I usually do.

I'm right around $700 so far. 8 sheets 1/2" exterior Plywood, 2 gallons of paint, 2 4x4 posts, 4 2x6s, 100ft hardware cloth(and I need another 100 feet), PVC, 6 mil plastic, chickens (duh), mason jar feeders, nipples, "spill free" fittings, pine shavings, going to need sand yet. If I go corrugated roofing like I want to, that's going to be another $100

That's not counting the tools, the dozen or so 2x4s I already have from other projects, or any hardware to actually put stuff together which I already have laying around.

WHen i'm done, this will be a 4x6 coop attached to a 6x20 run for 6 to 8 chickens.

You could probably do it a bit cheaper, but the hardware cloth is expensive no matter where you get it. Amazon was the cheapest for me, by a considerable amount.

Have you thought of pallets. Some very good plans on the Internet. Google is your friend. I have a carpenter friend and he told me that it's difficult and time consuming to disassemble pallets but the plans I've seen use them whole. Instructables is a nice site. They show you how to disassemble if you want to. You can get free pallets from some of the big box stores. FREEEEEEE. That's a start. Homesteading is another good resource.

Not quite finished actually a lil bit way to go but I will include pic. The base is a pallet and all the smaller wood is pallet wood. The sides are from a wooden fence treated fencing just needs paint. The flooring I put down is left over vinyl flooring from redoing a room in the house. Next is roof, doors, roosting bars which we plan front to back staggered to bars on one side and nesting boxes (not sure what the plans are for than yet.we will also use smaller pallet boards to cover the gaps in the walls on outside but that’s later plans I need something now lol we will continue to work lil by lil after we get them in there I’m sure they won’t mind. They aren’t of nesting age and the mini gaps will add ventilation for time being. It nothing fancy but they won’t mind lol we will use both coops for different purposes as I will be raising chicks eventually (hopefully) and will need the fenced run for them and smaller house for a heat light. Depending on temps outside. We are also in process of fencing in an area for them as my dogs seem to not be chicken friendly lol that’s y we r doing bare minimum for now then fence then finishing details before they are old enough to lay ;) hope this gives u some ideas
