Hey everyone. I wanted to build a new aviary specifically for ornamental duck species. About 3 months ago my previous aviary started to deteriorate and didn’t have safe living conditions for my birds so I decided to start new. That said I am still new to keeping exotic ducks so any help is appreciated. In this new aviary I plan to keep at least 4 pairs of ducks. What size aviary is recommended for that amount of ducks? How much water should they have access to? What material is best for a duck aviary? How high should should the roof be? Pictures would be very much appreciated as well. Thanks.

What species of ducks? I'll write up a reply tomorrow! Do you have a design in mind?

Ring teal, redhead, pintails, wood ducks. The design I had in mind was a dome style enclosure with nylon netting surrounded by hog panel and hardware cloth to keep predators away, although I’m open to design ideas. Thanks.

So sorry I lost this thread too 🤦‍♀️
This is mine. I like the design a lot, the only problems are our brutal winters here. I covered it with plastic this year, but because of our frequent high winds here and the pitch of the top the plastic tore pretty quickly. My concrete pond is amazing though. If that's an option I 100% recommend it.

Attached shed, super helpful in summer to brood ducklings in, quarantine sick birds, store all of my feed and supplies, and shelter in winter.

My only other struggle is keeping plants alive in it. The ducks love to nibble plants.

My aviary is about 40’ long x 30’ wide x 8’ netting roof…but at times (when raising some ducklings for friends, I’ve had 31 ducks in there with no issue, although normally only 15

I used a 50 gallon drum filled with gravel and a pool pump to make a rudimentary filter, but I still drain the water every few days….make sure you dig a 4” gravity drain under pond if you can

What size is your aviary? How do you drain and clean the cement pond?

Hi! It is 36x48'. I have a pvc drain pipe in the deepest part of the pond that is buried at an angle out to the ditch. A few feet over I have a valve connected to the pipe so I can drain it whenever I want. I think its like 6" diameter so drains very fast. In the winter I put an overflow pipe in the drain and leave the valve open, then trickle the hose in it on very cold days. When I want to clean it (usually every other week depending on how it looks) I pull the valve and drain it, then just spray it down thoroughly with the hose. Then shut the valve and refill. It takes a couple hours to fully fill. I might have some photos from when we built it, I'll see if I can find them. It works very well.
