I’m looking to add a dark brown egg layer to my small flock of 6 girls. I’m concerned about the Marans due to their feathered feet and how wet it is here (Seattle) so I’m looking at Barnevelder who are also supposed to lay darker eggs.

What’s been your experience with thei egg color? Would love to see pics of your girls and their eggs!

Have you thought about Welsummers? They also lay dark brown eggs, so that could be another option. Though I think the Barnevelders are beautiful and if I had room for more chickens, I would get one!
I've read nice things about the Welsummer as well! But love the lacing of the Barnies.
Are there other dark layers I'm not thinking of?

I don't know if there are other dark brown layers with clean legs. I'm pretty new to chickens! I don't have a Welsummer, but I have a Legbar x Welsummer Olive Egger (she came from a chocolate colored Welsummer egg). She's only 5 weeks old but she's very precocious, healthy, and smart. Poised, really. Definitely the leader of her hatching group. And gorgeous. The Barnevelders are really stunning, I actually didn't know that they laid dark brown eggs, but it's one of the breeds I've been secretly coveting.

I've had Wellies as well. Okay in laying and color. Tend to have spotted eggs, dark spots on clay background. Mine were a bit more aggressive so I went with the calmer, sweeter Barnevelder especially for the beautiful lace pattern. I have gold double laced line breeds I've created from an original really nice rooster.

There's also Penedesenca. Harder to spell and find.

Hi fellow chicken lover. Do you sell chicks?
