Hi all,

I hope you and your chickens are staying cool this summer! The temps are already in the upper 90's in Lewisville, Texas, where I live!

Does anyone have with experience with Barnevelders? My 12 week-old Barni's voice recently changed and sounds soft and deep, almost like a goose. Is that normal for this breed or could she have a respiratory infection? She seems OK. She is and always has been a little aloof from the other two who are her age (one pullet and one rooster). She's very passive compared to my Heritage Rhode Island Red cockerel and Silver Laced Wyandotte pullet. She is very sweet also absolutely gorgeous, her feathers are so shiny and colorful.

Chickens are such a trip!

Thanks for any comments or suggestions!

Get a hold of her and listen to her breathing to rule out any wheezing or rattling. More than likely she's just finding her adult voice if you hear nothing but breathing.

OK, thanks, will do. If I hear wheezing or rattling then what? I have some VetRX somewhere, is that what you would recommend using?

The young ones still sleep inside at night, because the older ones have not accepted them yet. But I worry about the AC blowing on them, thinking that could be causing respiratory problems. I'll go check her breathing now. Thanks again!

Going inside and outside could cause respiratory problems especially if your house has AC going. Drafts can cause problems too. If you think there's an actual problem posting in the emergency forum is a good idea. I personally don't treat so I can't advise about it.

I posted in the emergency illness section and did a search for "goose sounding chicken" and there were several posts similar to mine. One was even about a pullet the same age as mine! I will still keep an eye on her, but thank you for your helpful comments and support. Really means a lot when going through Chicken Worry. LOL. I worry a lot too.

Barnevelders have VERY distinctive voices, as I've found out. Even breeds that are derived FROM them turn out extremely "honky," such as Welsummers. :) I like to describe their sounds as dinosaur-like, prolonged, scratchy, and forced all at the same time. As long as your girl seems fine otherwise, it's best to assume she's simply chatting her lungs out. ;)

Thank you for responding! Yes, I came to that conclusion after several also responded who had girls who "honked." One was part Barnevelder. At least I quit worrying that she had a respiratory infection! She's very sweet and very shy, but absolutely gorgeous.

You're so welcome. :) I didn't want you to worry if there was nothing wrong with her health-wise. Enjoy your girl...and maybe giggle over her unique way of expressing opinions. ;)
