Hi

We’ve had chickens just over a year only had two

Poor Vera got Ill last week took to vet first one said was ok another vet said was impacted crop poor Vera so had an op to release it which it did , but still Ill and crop full again, very weak still trying to eat and drink , so upsetting back to another vet again did ultrasound and kept her in said had distended intestine and after nights in vets said worse as crop fuller very weak , said cld do exploratory op but didn’t want to as so weak and very thin , so had to let her go while I was at work so upsetting as it is writing this
He found she was blocked by 4 cm of grass and other bits she had eaten in the proventriculus
Makes me think she sh have had op as if taken this out she may have been ok ? Although know what the vet said
Now we are left with poor Edna , now we’ve another problem with her constant whining all day !! We can’t have that as have neighbours ,we squirted her yesterday with some water she did stop , I know it’s her grieving me to , but as soon as I’ve seen her and go in she whines all day and very loud , what can we do please ?
Should we Introduce another chicken now or leave it ? Can’t have her making this noise all the time , but don’t want her to get upset with us if we have to squirt her , so upsetting
Any advise please

Thanks

I saw in your intro that you lost Vera, but you really can't be faulted for trying everything you could to save her. Sometimes, despite our best efforts and those of the vets, we still lose chickens.

I would not squirt poor Edna; she is lost and lonely right now. Her "whining" may just be her attempt to locate Vera; she may give up soon. But she sounds like a girl who could really use a friend. Her world is likely a much scarier place without Vera by her side.

Plenty of folks will likely weigh in on the best way to find her a new buddy. You have to weigh your options -- quarantine if you find an adult bird or keeping any new chick(s) safe until it or they are big enough to hang out with her.

Hi

Thanks for your reply
Yes we won’t be doing that again
We put some sweetcorn and lettuce into a hanging feeder and she’s eating that
Finding it hard not seeing Vera she was only 18 months old and went down hill so quick she was always so active and lovely
I spent 6 hours with Edna yesterday layed down in the run
Thanks for your reply and advise
