I love these waterers and they are so easy to make and the gallon vinegar bottle is perfect because it is thicker than other bottles. I had the cups like you see in the 1st picture on all of my waters to begin with but started using the horizontal nipples after using them with the baby chicks. I just don’t know if the nipples will freeze in the winter.

I live in Georgia and it can get VERY hot here so I have a few waterers available at all times since my girls free range.

If you decide to make these make sure you drill a small hole in the other end so the water will flow when they use the waterer.

Hope someone finds this useful.

I have been using the cups for about a year now. The only bad thing is they do freeze in the winter so I always give them water in a bowl. Living in Ga I do t have to worry about it freezing a lot. It’s very easy to take off and clean or just clean it with your finger or a paper towel with it still attached.

I just started using the horizontal nipples and so far I love them and my girls seem to drink out of them just fine. No cons as of yet

Like I mentioned earlier, you have to put a little hole at the top of whatever container you use for the water to flow or the water won’t continue to come out.

The first couple years in Indiana I used a plastic 5 gallon water jug with the cups in it. They would freeze very easily so I would switch to a heated dog bowl in the winter. I also always had to fight leaks, not a huge deal but the area around my waterer stayed wet. Last year I bought one of the 5 gallon double wall founts and have a heated base for the winter. Best investment I have made. With my flock it would last 4-5 days and never froze so it was nice to only have to haul water out once a week or so instead of every day. If I didn't live in a cold climate I would go with something home made again.

Oh my gosh this is PERFECTLY timed. I don't want to have to continuously replace the waterers I have for my chicks... This is a perfect setup! I even have the gallon vinegar jugs at home lol. So you just drill a hole at the bottom for the horizontal nipple? (and that hole in the top to equalize the pressure)

5 gallon bucket. 3 HN. Lid not fully closed to allow air flow. Where it sits prevents them from sitting/ pooping on it. It also out of the sun. Stick tank used in dead of winter. The HN don't freeze. At least rarely. And each morning i make sure they are operational. I was going to post a picture but my uploads seem to not be working. I just posted a picture in another thread on hacks.
