We have never had peafowl but are wanting to get started with them. Were would be the best online hatchery to buy them. Do they need a coop. Do they do well with other animals and birds. What do they eat? Ithink i want Blue idian because of there looks. Are they good with kids?

A search should answer most of your questions but to answer your first one, I would advise against getting them at a hatchery. The hatchery most likely buys them from a breeder and just resales them to you. You will end up paying more in the end. Your best bet would be to get them from a breeder, just look around and I am sure you can find somone relatively close to you. As far as the othe questions go it depends on several factors including whether or not you want to free range them etc, etc.

Thanks i tries searching in my area and they were no breeders within 200 miles but I sill need more info

Sorry, but I was referring to a search on BYC to find the info you want to know, most of it has already been discussed. There may be other breeders around but they may not be listed. Keep checking craigslist and go to a few livestock auctions and just ask around.

Start with the link above it is the United Peafowl Association. We also have a chat forum upaforum.com.
Asking around here on BYC too will help too... there are a lot of very reputable breeders .... but you need to put your location in your profile.
eggbid.com is like ebay for poultry, you can look there too.

Yes your location would help alot.......some good breeders do sale on eggbid, but be sure to check their feedback. If 0 feedback beware there are a few guys on there selling sick birds and just keep changing their user name.

Peafowl can be shipped thru the USPS, if no breeders are near you. I have shipped full grown birds, even males with full trains(tails)

I would buy from Deerman in a second but he does not ship to Va. I have an India Blue male and should have a pair of whites 1 years old in May; however I am in Lynchburg, Va which is 3 hours north of Charlotte. Check Craig's list. There will be plenty for sale beginning in May or June.

The best peafowl we got was through a local lady. They are then hardy to your area and you have a local support person. If there is a local bird group I would join in and go from there searching for someone. Here in VT we have an online support group and monthly swaps for 8 months or so out of the year. You can get most anything you want. The best thing to do is get babies and keep them in a coop to acclimate them to you and your area. Adults do not acclimate well. They tend to take off. Your price is more reasonable going local if you can and you will end up being able to buy the number you want instead of a minimum that the hatchery tells you that you need to buy. Just beware. Our lady had such wonderful birds it was hard to not walk out with some of everything.
