I’ve got to find out who’s laying the strange, ugly egg, Agatha or Effie. They are both Black Copper Marans, both from a breeder close to me, and both lay a very different looking egg from my first BCM, Molly Maran. She lays a gorgeous, chocolate egg (between a 6 and 7 on the BCM egg color scale), which is wonderful for a hatchery bird. She’s a 2018 model from Meyer Hatchery.
Here’s a sampling of the bum egg either Agatha or Effie is giving me.
Two pics of crackled egg. Unfortunately, it is these particular eggs that one of the pullets lay in the nest boxes where they usually end up busted. Crackled on one side and blow out looking on the other side.
Two pics of half n half colored egg.
This one has calcium deposits on it and also the dark spots can be scratched off, not easily, but they can.
I don’t think James Bond would like this BCM egg.
Two pics of the spotted egg.
This egg is from the other BCM. It is pretty, but not a normal BCM colored egg. You can see some of the dark pigmented spots in the second picture were scratched off by the pullet. She has since started laying smooth spotted eggs.
Four pics of a pretty egg...until it’s rolled over.
These are also from my dud egg laying bird.
These pics were taken after I washed the dirt off. For whatever reason, the pullet will lay these in random places, the run, the yard. Go figure. These eggs have nice hard shells on them.
These two birds are 7 months old. What are the chances they “grow out” of laying these odd ball eggs and begin laying nice solid chocolate eggs? Slim to none? Probably! I can live with the spotted eggs because they are pretty, but the other one, not so much. I don’t need a BCM that isn’t going to lay the signature chocolate colored egg.
I guess I should mention both these pullets are on Purina Flock Raiser with oyster shell on the side. They appear and act very healthy and free range all day.
Thanks for all advice.
