Black Star Hens.....Black Jersey Giant Rooster

Howdy!

I'm gonna find myself a BLACK Jersey Giant Rooster somewhere, if I have to raise it from an egg!

I've got 16 Black Stars (?) (6-7 weeks old) and some have almost NO barring/gold. ALMOST pure black with black beaks and legs. One even seems to have the beginnings of a BLACK comb!I want to breed those with a BLACK Jersey Giant Rooster. (About 6-8 hens).

The other Black Stars will go with my "mixed flock" mostly for egg production.

But, I think I'd like to "play" with some genetics and learn about it a little bit with a BLACK Jersey Giant Rooster. In this way, perhaps, the "culls" will be my "meat birds". (I realize that they are NOT "feed efficient", but I'd like BIG, because I like "home-smoked turkey".) No, I don't want to raise any turkeys.

I've started a new pen and coop for this project.

I expect it will be interesting.

I'm glad to hear that the Jersey Giant roosters are mild-mannered!

My only rooster, now, is a Great guy (unless you wear "shorts" around him or go "shirtless"....then he, apparently, feels you are "threatening" his flock.

Any comments or ideas?

If you go over to the online poultry show(in this site) they have fun competitions for bantams ect...under large breeds, somone owns a giant in there named patrick, maybe they can help you.
I personnally do not know much about the breed except I couldnt beleive how big they get, see them around at different shows.
