13 wk old heritage turkeys.
Royal Palm started looking lethargic, Tues. noticed yellow diarrhea. Quarantined him, started trying to dose him with stuff we had on hand.
Reached out to someone local who dealt w this last year (and this year).

He started eating on his own, had no yellow poop we saw yesterday. We had some hope.
Today, he went downhill fast!
We lost him this afternoon.
Now one of the female blue slates are lethargic. We are dosing their feed & water.

These were to be meat for holidays & also a breeding pair.

As it is now, I just want them healthy & will sell them.
Third time dealing with turkeys; first time illness. Just gonna stick with other fowl but not turkeys.

They’re getting a chick crumble with 18% protein.
Egg yolk, honey, cayenne, nutridrench, colloidal silver, poultry booster, garlic, echinacea and olive leaf. Oh and ACV.
(That’s not all at once, just a compiled list.)

Anything else we can do? Don’t have a bird vet. Nor do I want meds for them that means we can’t eat the meat/eggs from.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry to hear your poults are sick. Unfortunately, the meds they need are not approved for use in poultry.

This is what my vet recommended:
Metronidazole at 23 - 27 mg per pound orally once a day for 5 days.
  • Enrofloxacin (Baytril) is also needed to treat the E. coli infection that they get with blackhead. It's not actually the blackhead that kills them, it's the secondary E. coli infection that does. Give 7mg per pound orally twice a day for 3-5 days.
  • Fenbendazole (Safeguard/Panacur) will treat the cecal worm. Give 0.23 ml per pound orally once and repeat in 10-14 days
  • Toltrazuril at 11 mg per pound once a day for 3 days
If they aren't drinking & eating, they need to be tube-fed.

Step 1:
Bring the bird inside and place in a warm room, 80-85 degrees is ideal (watch for signs of over-heating).

Step 2:
Weigh the bird

Step 3:
Once warmed, correct hydration, and this should not be done until the bird is warmed up. Tube warmed (102 degrees) Pedialyte or Gatorade at 14 ml per pound of body weight, wait 60-90 minutes, and repeat. If no poop is produced by 3 hours after the first tubing, repeat once more.

Step 4:
Once the bird is pooping you can start tubing warmed Kaytee Exact baby bird food or a non-lay crumble (lay crumble has too much calcium). Start by tubing 14 ml per pound of body weight and increase a little at each feeding. Do not exceed 23 ml per pound of body weight. Sick birds are tube fed 2-4 times a day.

Wrong feed and harmful supplements. The chick starter is deficient in their protein needs as well as being deficient in the levels of lysine, methionine and niacin that poults need.

Colloidal silver has been proven by a Mayo Clinic study to have no value which is one of the reasons that the FDA will not approve it for human use. It can also contribute to heavy metal poisoning.

Garlic is a known toxin for poultry. ACV interferes with the proper absorption of calcium.

They were on game bird 22% for the recommended time period. Then moved down to either 18 or 16.5%.

Not here to argue about whether you think silver works or not. It works for us here & thousands of others, same with garlic & ACV being used.

Gane Bird or turkey starter that is high protein (28 to 30%) for the first 6 to 8 weeks is the recommended feed followed by Turkey grower which is usually 24 % protein for the next 6 weeks.

After that time the recommended feed is an all flock feed which also has higher levels of lysine, methionine and niacin than your chick crumbles.

A Mayo Clinic study has proven thst colloidal silver does not cause any benefits. Whether you think so or not it does contribute to heavy metal poisoning.

Garlic may be beneficial for people but is a known toxin to poultry.

ACV can seem to work for some people due to the placebo effect. Poultry can't experience the placebo effect.
