My husband has shown some interest in having some hens that would lay blue eggs, and I am 100% here for chicken math. I love breeds that are blue, grey, or black feathered. I am also looking for breeds that aren’t going to be huge when done growing. So far all I am finding are ones that would lay green eggs with those feather colors. Are there any chicken breeds that come in blue, grey, or black and also lay blue eggs?

Ameraucana (purebred, not the “americana” in feed stores) come in blue, black, and self blue(also called lavender). Some breeders breed for blue eggs and type, others only breed for type, so you would have to do some research. I am pretty sure cackle sells true ameraucanas.

Careful with the opal legbars though. Opal legbars from my experience are very prone to getting sick due to their low genetic diversity in the US. I wouldn’t get any from big hatcheries as they are even poorer of quality. Probably even more poor quality genetic and health wise than a breeder’s bird. Great personalities and overall an extremely smart and fun bird but just, genetically, a mess.

Prairie Bluebell Eggers are very diverse in appearance. I have six. One is black with gold flecks. Two look exactly like Brown Leghorns. One is silver grey. One started out white but matured mostly red with some white, like a Salmon Faverolle. And the sixth is blue, much like a Sapphire Gem. But they all lay beautiful blue eggs.
