Both of my Tolbunt Polish roosters, 6 months old, seem to have hip problems. The weaker one has always seemed a bit lame, limped occasionally, but always gallops when he runs. It made me think that maybe he had poor hip mobility, and couldn’t flex his hip enough to get the right leg any further forward. He has also been delayed in crowing until very recently. His brother had been totally normal but is just now starting to limp when he walks. My RIR hen is very dominant and REALLY didn’t appreciate the young roos attempts at mounting her so I didn’t pay much mind to the limping intermittently but it’s constant now, for both of them.
All my other 13 hens are totally normal.
Is hip dysplasia thing with chickens? Being a “fancy” breed, is this more of a possibility? Are they more sore now, as they’re growing and putting more weight on bad hips?

You may have a structural problem that is contributing to this. How much space in your coops? How high are the roosts? What and how deep is the bedding beneath the roosts? How many chickens and what is the square footage of the coop? Do these two cockerels commonly have only rocky terrain to walk on?

Have you examined the legs and feet for signs of injury? Look for light green bruising if the legs are light enough color to show it. Look for scabs on the bottoms of the feet and swelling. Look for broken nails and splinters. Look at the leg scales for signs of lifting and pulling away from the shanks (leg mites).
