Hello all! So I purchased a dozen Brahmas for meat this spring but ended up loving them too much to eat😂! So right now we are considering switching out whole flock so Brahmas. The internet is giving me mixed answers on egg laying capabilities though. We are a family of 4 but do not eat eggs every day. We mainly use eggs in cookies/ cakes/breads and so forth. My Mom does bake quite often though. I'd appreciate if you would chime in and help me out. Thank you!
@StinkyAcres I know you have Brahmas!

I'd have to vote "unacceptable," especially for someone who eats eggs every day, which seems to me to be the majority of chicken owners. For your situation they might work as you won't have too many eggs to know what to do with. But at the same time you are feeding large birds lots of food for few, small eggs in return. They are better during the spring and fall, but during the heat of summer I am getting maybe 2 a day from four 2-year-old hens. That's been my experience with my hens so far.

Oh I see. That makes sense. Thank you for the reply!!😁

About one year ago I got two adult brahma hens. I do not know their exact age, but they are definitely older than two years old. If I only had them, I'd vote "awful". I have one daughter from one of them, she's an Oriental gamefowl×brahma. Her production would be "acceptable", but she's only a pullet

Like Stinky said, having more birds might help even things out, especially if you're not avid egg eaters.

My birds are not hatchery stock. I don't know where Stinky got their birds from, but hatchery stock might produce a bit better than the average exhibition brahma

I see! Thank you for the response! So, my goal is to have enough Brahma girls to be able to hatch quite a few eggs next spring. I am thinking now, I will probably keep some Australorps too. Thank you both for the response!

I'd have to say acceptable as ours have yet to go broody therefore don't have periods of no laying due to broodiness.

We have four Brahmas and I always see 1-3 at any given time on a nest. We have 16 layers : 4 Brahma, 4 OE, 1 Borp, 7 Black Australorp, but we have 3 BA, 1BO, 2OE that go broody once a month therefore we get about 8-9 eggs a day, with a day or two being a lot less than that as given.

They do eat a chick start 20% protein from our local mill with egg shells and oyster on side. We absolutely love our Brahmas and plan on getting more colors once this current flock passes. They are so much more docile, quiet, calm, and big n fluffy! Lol
