Broken Leg? Please Help!

Hi everyone,

I noticed my one year old hen limping and breathing heavy two days ago, she would take a few steps and then sit down. Still has an appetite though. Upon noticing this I isolated her in a crate and gave electrolytes in her water for a boost. I had to go on an overnight trip and didn’t notice anything upon my first quick examination before I left, but when I got home this evening I looked her over thoroughly and found this injury on her right leg below the joint.

Does this look like a broken leg? I have never dealt with an injury like this before and don’t know the severity of what I’m looking at. Should I monitor and see if this will resolve itself or continue to isolate her? Does this require a sling, splint, or binding? And is there anything I can give her for pain?

Please advise. I feel so badly for her.

Looks like a callus and/or pressure area from her resting on it.

Getting an XRay would be best if you think it's broken.
What would you recommend I do for her? After you mentioned it, I do think this is more like a pressure sore. I looked into making a sling for her, but I’ve heard mixed thoughts on whether or not that would be necessary for a case like this (and I know they require constant supervision in a sling, which I am unable to commit to as I work full time).

I don’t think it’s broken at this point but the sore isn’t getting better. I don’t know if I should try wrapping it or putting ointment on it or what. I hate to see her in pain, I can tell she’s still eating fine because her crop is full at the end of the day but she is pretty much in the same spot of the coop whenever I check on her.

You can try wrapping it and see if that helps.

Is she not able to stand or move about at all? If she's not, then do check her daily to make sure her bum is clean and not soiled, a dirty bum will attract flies which will lay eggs and this can cause Fly Strike.

She can hobble about - her limp seems more extreme than it did a couple days ago, but the wound also looks better to me. I took these photos yesterday. I’m wondering if it’s a roost bar scrape?

Do you have a recommendation on what kind of wrap would be best?

And thank you, I have been checking her bum and luckily she’s stayed pretty clean!

Could be a scrape from the roosting bar, hard to tell, but if she's resting on it, then it may make it harder to heal.

Vet wrap/sports wrap is what I like to use. You will definitely need to check the sore place daily if you wrap.
