Hi all!

Thanks for welcoming me into this great community.

I am desperately in need of some advice or information.

I have a bantam Cochin hen who is my best friend (her name is Lady) and we have really been through it lately!

She was attacked by someone in the flock (not sure who) so I separated her in the quarantine area to let her heal. She is healing great! However, once she started to feel her normal self again…she became broody (she was trying to be broody before the accident). I gave her two eggs to sit on since she was already in the house and away from the flock. Once she started sitting on the eggs, though, she began sneezing, wheezing, and scratching her little face.

I thought it was a respiratory infection and after doing some research, got Tiagard for her. She finished her 5 day cycle yesterday but is still exhibiting symptoms.

She is still eating once a day for me and seems to be very pleased with her egg situation.

My question is this—what could be making her sick, and what can I do to help her?

I give her rooster booster in her water, feed her a high protein mash along with treats….but I’m at a loss.

What dosage of the TiaGard tiamulin did you give? Was it in her water while she was sitting on eggs? Tiamulin or Denagard are good for MG. But the dosage has to be taken by the chicken. Broodies don’t drink well. I would consider breaking her broody spell and treating her for another 5 days, making sure that she drinks enough.

The dosage was super tough for me to figure out due to her tiny size. I gave it to her orally mixed with apple juice. And yes I’ve been having issues getting her to drink so I’ve been making her a mash to help get some liquids in her system. She eats great, just doesn’t want to drink very much.

Denagard or tiamiulin 12.5% dosage is 8 ml per gallon of water for 5 days. You can make a smaller amount of 2 ml per quart or liter of water. Use a smaller syringe to measure. As far as I know it is given in water, and she needs to drink enough of it.

Okay. Thank you for the information. How should I ensure she’s drinking it? I will take your advice about breaking her broodiness. But I am worried that her being sick will make her not want to drink much water. I know that many suggest putting apple juice in the medicine solution so it doesn’t taste as bad, which I will also do.

ETA: This is once a day, right?
