Hello!

I have a beautiful Rouen lady who is starting to become broody….

She’s been laying for a couple weeks now, she’s a first time layer, she shares the coop with 7 other ladies…

She’s sitting and guarding an empty next now for about 20 minutes (I collect the eggs daily)

I would let her go naturally with them but that is not in my best interest at the moment, so I was wondering if I should consider fake eggs?

I read conflicting reviews saying it either helps or decreases egg laying, helps the duck think the next is full vs needs to be taken away from broody ducks

I know fake eggs a tool that is used more for laying location consistency but can I give my Brody duck fake eggs to sit on?

- Would this affect her laying? (Trick her into thinking she’s done laying or will she keep going)

Its only been 20 minutes?
If she's sitting like that tomorrow, I'd work to break her broodiness, being broody takes a lot out of a bird
Thank you! I had a pekin who went broody last summer, I decided to let her go naturally but yes it took a lot out of her…how would I break the broodiness if this continues?

Remove the fake eggs and if she sits longer than 20 minutes remove any eggs she has laid and chase her out of the coop. I find ducks are much easier to break of broodiness than chickens unless you have Muscovy they are the silkies of the duck world when it comes to broodiness.

Agreed, you’ll want to break her broodiness. There’s no point in keeping her broody without an end result.

There’s a lot of ways to do it. Personally, I kick broodies off their nest & lock them out of the coop during the day. If they’re still broody after a few days, I will go in and destroy their nesting site while they aren’t watching. Most of mine break after that, but I have 1 right now who just built a new nest and will need more time to break.
