Building a pond? Told I couldn't!

So I have some ducks and I really wanted to build them an area where they can go swimming, like, actually swimming, not just a tiny plastic pool like they have now. However, I've been told that I can't do that, because the water will become toxic to my chickens after two days of the ducks being in it (they do be nasty–) and I... admittedly don't know a lot about ponds. I was going to make a small one for them to just dive and play in, it was never meant to be my animal's only source of water, my chickens are not that intelligent though, so... I see where the concern is coming from.

Is there any way to make them a pond that I can clean, somehow? I've seen people make ponds for their ducks before, I was told once off-handedly that it's more of a location issue that a building issue... I didn't quite understand what they meant though when they said that. I'm in AZ, I don't know if that would make any difference or not to my ability to have or build a small pond, but–

I figured I'd put it out there anyways, just in case it does make a difference.

Let me offer some thoughts, and IDEAS.
An Ideal pond would be somewhere that has a small running stream, to provide fresh water source constantly. This way, the water changeout is constant.
You being in Arizona,,, not knowing exactly where,,,, But if in a dry location,,, that puts things in a Unfavorable list.
If you do have a source of unlimited water available,, then that puts you into Favorable list. If so,,, then I can elaborate more how to construct things,, (pond)
If you are in a DRY area,, I suggest you be content with a SMALL plastic pool, that you empty out regularly.
Have separate water drinking sources for your chickens. Chickens will not necessarily, be crowding into deeper Duck Water Pool.

WISHING YOU BEST,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and :welcome

Yeah, that makes sense. We don't have unlimited water available, we have to haul ours, and, I'd need to refill it by hand, so I can see how that would cause an issue. Pool it is then!
