Bumblefoot or callus?

Hi there!

I've attached pictures of our chocolate runner Fudge's foot. She has this little bump & I'm wondering if anyone knows if it's very early bumblefoot, a callus or something else? It's dead center of her foot.

We first noticed it about 4-5 days ago after we saw her limping. I followed bumblefoot protocol (isolated, rest, cartoons, extra peas, Epsom salt soaks, Neosporin then switched to MicrocynAH Wound Care), but there has been no change - for the better or worse. She has the limp off & on. Sometimes her leg is warm, other times it's the same temp as her other leg. Normal appetite. There has been no red around the actual spot that would lead me to think infection/inflammation.

I've tried picking at the center, but it doesn't easily come off & I don't want to aggravate it if it doesn't need it.

If this is normal, I think the limp might be from an aggressive "hop on top" round (even though I have no drakes) or when she was in her diaper last, I don't know if her foot bent funny going in? If that's the case, we'll continue to take it easy, but she'll probably enjoy not having to have her foot wrapped anymore!

If it is bumblefoot, do I just have to pick really hard? Other tips?

I appreciate any input!

Hi . What kind of surface does she walk on?
The one in the middle might be a tiny little bumble, but since she has other spots that are similar, I don’t think that’s what’s causing her to limp and unless she’s just sore if she’s walking on something like metal bars, perhaps? A lot of times my duck’s limp because they step on something and it twist their foot a little and they get a sprain and it goes away after a week with a few soaks and some rest time.
I suggest giving her extra niacin in the form of liquid B complex
. Are you giving your ducks any extra niacin besides their feed right now? What kind of feed are they on ?

the niacin in the liquid B complex really strengthens legs and feet

You can pour one ML of the liquid b complex into a small dish of mealworms or some other treat that you know she will eat it all up or you can give it orally with a syringe with no needle

It wouldn’t hurt even if it is Bumblefoot

You could also start giving your ducks some nutritional yeast. I add 1 tablespoon of it per cup of feed sometimes if I feel like my ducks need a little extra niacin

Even though duck feed contains what is supposed to be a good level of niacin for Ducks a lot of ducks just need more

Also, with Bumblefoot after I soak with Epson salt water, I apply Epson salt poultice before I wrap
That helps soften it up and gets ready for it to remove the scab and the kernal but yours looks so small. I don’t even think there would be anything under that scab

If I do remove a scab and a colonel, then I use antibiotic ointment without pain relief on the wound before I wrap with gauze pad and vet wrap

Thank you so much for responding!

Right now they are walking on hay in their run, but we live in MN, so there have been a few -30 degree days, so they were inside on washable pee pads & they shower in our shower. I don't know if she stepped funny on a tile in the shower, or oyster shell in her run when she was inside, but they don't have many rough surfaces they walk on.

I struggle convincing myself it's bumblefoot because of how tiny it is & there's been no change, but I'd hate to take a chance. I've been putting Rooster Booster in her water & we just started putting extra niacin in all of their water. They eat Mazuri Waterfowl Maintenance. Their favorite snack is peas, so we make sure they get lots of those for extra niacin too.

If I were a betting woman (which I'm not 😂), I think it's more than likely a callus & she just contorted funny when we put on her diaper last & maybe has a little sprain/sore leg/hip?

We're supposed to have better weather this week, so I'll continue to keep an eye on it while assuming it's bumblefoot, but I always appreciate any input! That's what I love this site for!

I fed my ducks Mazuri too, so fun to watch them gobble it up off the water .
The RB poultry cell vitamin mixture taste terrible though . my birds don’t want to drink water with it. Perhaps you just put a little in a large amount of water.? I have also tried adding Nutri drench in water before and they seem to like that Taste a little better.
May I add, It’s not recommended to add the niacin to the water though, it dissipates and they won’t get a good dose of it.
We really have seen amazing results for limping by using the durvet liquid b complex it has a very good high dose of the right kind of niacin.
One of my ducks is in a crate in my duck hospital room this week because she slipped on the ice And has a terrible limp from what I believe is a sprain.
She was throwing her wings out to balance herself because she didn’t want to put any weight on that foot. And inenough pain to not want to eat anything so I have been tube feeding her and giving her the liquid bcomplex in the Feed mixture along with some Nutridrench vitamins, and some meloxicam for pain, and also a dose of glucosamine chondroitin with msm . Poor little girl is 10 years old. She’s a khaki Campbell.

After a soak, I was able to pull something out. It wasn't a hard kernel, it was more soft. It's left a little hole in her foot. I pack the hole with Neosporin, wrap in gauze & vet wrap. I soak her 1-2 times a day in Epsom salt.

This is what it looks like 2 days later. Is this normal progression from bumblefoot? About how long does it take them to heal completely?

Also, during the entire recovery time the duck is supposed to be isolated? Just want to make sure I do this right, as I'm thinking 2 more of my girls have the same thing!
