Hi all, a few days ago we rescued two turkey hens. One was immediately limping when we got home and after examining her, it looked like she had bad Bumblefoot in both feet. We now know the other one is just as bad but is lighter on her feet so isn’t limping as much. This morning I attempted surgery on the worst affected hen. After cutting through the scab however blood started coming from where I was expecting the core of this infection to be. Same was true of the other foot. As soon as the scab was off, it just looked like raw skin underneath. The blood supply is directly beneath the scab which from my understanding wouldn’t happen with the core of a Bumblefoot infection. One of her feet is swollen and she was loosing too much blood for me to carry on cutting so I’ve put a magnesium sulphate poultice on and wrapped both feet up. I’ve also been giving her oral doses of amoxicillin to try to combat the infection.
Now obviously if this is Bumblefoot i need to get the core out, how do I go about that considering the bleeding? Is it possible this is something other than Bumblefoot? I’ve included pictures of her feet after cleaning. Any advice would be appreciated. We don’t have a vet within a 4 hour drive that will see her and I would like her to get the chance to enjoy life. She is fine otherwise

Hi @GeorgetheTVturkey :frow Welcome To BYC
It looks like Bumblefoot to me.
When you change the dressing can you post a photo of what the foot looks like now?

The poultice may help draw up the kernel.
Soak the feet in a warm epsom salts bath. You can also apply clear (decolorized) Iodine (not the red stuff) to the scabs and wrap the feet, this may make it easier to remove the scabs and press out the pus.

The thing is I can’t see evidence of a kernel at all, i will take further pictures when I change dressings, I couldn’t get any earlier because I was trying to get them wrapped ASAP. Hopefully like you say the poultice will dry the kernel out and make it easier to remove!

I discovered that the best thing to use on bumblefoot is a herbal and homeopathic 'drawing salve', found at Walmart and, apparently, any pharmacy. I posted about it here (in post #3):

If you're not in the mood to watch youtube videos, I'll give you the 'tl ; dw' : PRID works. It's made of a few herbs and other things and of course there must be quite a few active compounds in there and all of them working synergistically must be the key. PRID is particularly suitable here because , while there is clear infection present, it's dispersed, and it needs to come to the surface.

Here is the amazon page https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000GKN36W/?tag=backy-20
I really love the feathered and I want the best for them so I'll just cut and paste a fragment of the top review from amazon, left by 'Sarah':

"Randomly I came across PRID drawing salve on a site on how to get rid of cysts fast. I swear I have been to almost every acne forum online because of how long I have been suffering from acne. I am an adult...words cannot express the psychologically damaging effects cystic acne has, let alone as an adult. I obtained a jar of PRID because of the rave reviews for its drawing powers on cysts.

Last night at 3:00 a.m., I put on a thick gob on the cyst and went to sleep. At 10:30 a.m., I wiped the salve off. The night before, I had used a sterilized pin to try and pop it, (like I said before, it was softer than the chin cysts, otherwise I never would have done that), so there was a small hole in the cyst. So this morning after I wiped the salve off, I pushed the cyst upward slightly to encourage drainage. I couldn't believe it...the salve had WORKED. A whole bunch of stuff came out (sorry, gross) and I immediately felt less pain and the size had reduced. I continued putting the salve on for a few hours (the jar says twice a day, but I put it on every two hours, took it off, and gently pushed to encourage drainage). Eventually nothing else came out, so I need to let it sit again overnight, but in ONE DAY the size has DECREASED BY MORE THAN HALF.

Normally these things take TWO WEEKS to go away! And the salve made it almost completely drain in 12 HOURS?! It's magic."

I’ve watched all the YouTube videos there are lol! I have seen a lot of people on about PRID but just assumed it was only available in the US. I’ve just checked amazon and got it on same day delivery so thank you for that recommendation! I’ll give that a whirl, any tips for using it on her toes? I’ve bandaged feet before but never had Bumblefoot in a birds toes before. I just want her to be better, poor baby.

Thanks for listening! I think it's best if you wear disposable gloves when you apply it, so that you don't contaminate it, because I read these are the rules with homeopathy. There are videos on how to bandage chicken feet on youtube, but I don't remember if they bandage the toes there too. Still, it's easier for a turkey's toes than a chicken's toes....:)

They mustve been kept in wet soiled environment. Poor birds; that's FPD. Foot pad Dermatitis.

No it’s from scratching and got cut.. and got infected. It hurts them. I just found one of my birds with it. Pulled the plug but no kernel.. been soaking and getting puss. Going to put prid on it. I hope it helps.
