I had a heat lamp in with my hens out in the tractor I covered the heatlamd in wire do the hens woudent get to close to the bulb. all of my hens found away to burn of some of the feathers on their backs even though the heat lamp was raised. I checked over each hen to see if it had done damage to anything other then their feathers and they seem fine. I know that they were burned off because of the burning smell on my chickens. I have replaced the heat lamp with another that they cant get near. I was just wondering if their feathers will grow back of if they need to molt out before they grow back. They are twelve weeks old and not laying so when will their next molts be?
thanks in advance
Henry

Their feathers probibly got burned because maybe the bulb was to hot. I use a 60 watt bulb. My chickens rip out there own feathers if they start to get warn out. I'm not sure but I belive most chickens molt about once a year.

I will try and change the bulb it is hot Its a big red brooder bulb.
Anyone who knows about the molt ?

Thanks
Henry

Raise the light up higher
Its too close to them
And once they molt the new feathers will be as good as new
