Hardware cloth is pretty darn expensive. I have been shopping around online for good deals on hardware cloth for my coop and run. I came across this roll of hardware cloth online http://www.zoro.com/i/G3430077/?category=7359. Price is very good (free shipping) for 48-inch x 50 ft, 19 gauge, galvanize, 1/2 inch mesh for $58.95 a roll. But I read the following California Proposition 65 warning for this product...

*1 : California Proposition 65 : This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm.\
*2 : California Proposition 65 : This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer.

I have seen a couple of BYC members use these for their coop. Do you guys think its safe for the chicken coop and run?

There are probably a lot of products with this warning. I might just be more aware, at the moment.

Here is another product with this warning: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0009H53AQ/?tag=backy-20

Yeah, I think it's a bit crazy. Where I work we aren't allowed to ship licorice or ginger to California because of Prop 65. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I've never heard of licorice causing birth defects, or ginger, and people eat it.

The hardware cloth isn't bad in less they eat the Galvin iz action process makes it more weather resistant but poisonous if heated to steels melting point or if ingested I have used it for years never had any problems

I've Noticed California puts this on EVERYTHING now... Last Christmas I bought cute little coffee cups to fill with candy to give out as gifts. Every single coffee cup had a sticker that said that..

I'm pretty sure everything caused cancer when you're in California, for some reason! lol!

I thought 1/4" should be used for outside, but I'm so new to this! Actually just building our coop right now. Can it be 1/2" or should you use 1/4"?

It depends on what predators you have. That's a GREAT price, thanks for posting. But I just went to the link you provided and under the specifications it said 50'.

On my run I have 2"x 4" welded wire. On my openings to the coop I have some 1/2" x 1" expanded steel on some doors and 1/2" x 1" hardware cloth on vents. I have seen places that raccoons reached into the run pawing around for goodies at night but the girls are all in the coop. My coop floor is probably 32" of the ground and the roost is head height so they are away from the grabbing paws. Now daytime presents a potential that a critter could grab one through the wire but it hasn't been a problem. Predators tend to be more nocturnal but the potential is there. Recently one of mine while free ranging in the yard had a fox grab her in broad daylight. I got her back and she was hurt but doing well now.

I do plan to put a smaller mesh along the bottom of the run if I raise chicks but will leave the 2" x 4" wire as well. 1/2" cloth should keep most hungry mouths and chicken grabbing paws out. If you live in an area with alot of domestic animals (cats, dogs) running around then I would go with the hardware cloth since dogs/cats will be out and about during the day just like your chickens.

On causing cancer. I wouldn't worry about it. You probably get more cancer causing agents from your state owned aging water infrastructure than your chickens or you will ever get from handling the wire. Old rotted iron supply pipes, galvanized pipes, run off into rivers and aqueducts from parking lots, industry, etc. It would probably be safer to lick the fence every day than drink the state supplied water. (california disclaimer- this statement was not intended as instruction for safe consumer practices or as proper use of hardware cloth. It is being presented as comedic humor only and not representing the beliefs or opinions of byc, the poster, or any that read it.) :D

My bad. Price is for 50 feet, not 100 feet. I went ahead and ordered 2 rolls of the hardware cloth from zoro.com. I used the coupon code SUNSHINE7 and got an extra $20 off my order. For 2 rolls of 48-inch x 50 ft, 19 gauge, galvanize, 1/2 inch hardware cloth with free shipping, I paid $97.90. Pretty good deal!
