Hello. We recently started this new adventure of raising chickens. We came home with 4 Wyandottes, 2 Amberlinks, and 1 California White. All was fine for a few hours but suddenly the California White was bleeding and being attacked. We’ve cleaned the wound, add antibiotic and isolated her but there is now a black mass where she had been attacked. She is full of energy but we can’t seem to get the wound to heal despite regular antibiotic and flushing the wound with warm water. It’s been approx 4 days. I think it is bothering her because she sometimes starts pecking at it and balding the area further. We’ve also tried styptic powder. The wound is directly on her back between the two wing joints. Any other ideas? Is it likely she’ll recover?

Thank you for the advice. Its been eating and drinking well. We've been going back and forth on the electrolyte additive as the package said they needed fresh water every once in a while.

Maybe looking a bit better? She's still in isolation but we've given her a mirror that she's responding to well. She hasn't been pecking at herself the past two days.

We’ve been keeping up with the antibiotic ointment but she went after it last night. It isn’t nearly as raw but the scab? is getting larger.

she has such a nice face 🤗 hope she gets better!:jumpy

Still got her in isolation and keeping the sore moist. She’s still full of energy but it doesn’t seem to really be healing. Photos were right before we medicated for the evening.

If you touch the large area, does it feel like there is any air under it. I’m wondering if there is a leaking or ruptured air sac under the wound. The lungs are in that area, and there are numerous air sacs in the chicken’s body.

I gently touched it today and it immediately started draining blood. I kept flushing it while it drained and it did get a bit smaller but it’s still large. I put some more antibiotic on it now and keeping an eye on her. She’s seems very weak after all of that.
