Hi all,

Today I picked up a rooster from a lady needing to get rid and I have plans to breed him with some of my girls. I have three in mind - a barred hybrid, a light Sussex and a leghorn. The only issue is the rooster is very small and has been pushed around quite a bit from the bigger hens. I’m hoping he’ll eventually work his way up the pecking order and the hens will pay more attention to him. But my main question is can he mate with them? I’m worried he might not be able to ‘reach’. I’ve attached pictures of both him and the hens. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Yep, bantam roosters can mate standard hens just fine. How old is he? If he's still a cockerel he might not gain their respect until he's a bit older

If the hens squat down a lot he should get to them! I know others have been able to. *this is only if he makes it up the peaking order and doesn't get bullied so much* I would just check if the eggs are fertile whenever you eat them. Breeding a silkie and a normal chicken results in "frizzle" feathers: https://silkiechickenexperts.com/bl...characteristics-of-the-frizzle-silkie-chicken
Hope it works!
