Can a rooster breed with his offspring?

We have D'uccles... one Rooster and 3 hens. I plan to hatch eggs from them. From there, can I hatch eggs from the same rooster and any offspring pullets that he may produce? Is there a genetic reason why I shouldn't? I really don't want more than one rooster.

If he and his daughter have defects, they will become very evident. Don't get rid of your other rooster until you confirm the match up works and improves your birds. Line breeding can be very effective in setting traits you want, but can also set the bad ones.

I would get a new cock for breeding and put papa on standby or get rid of him, its up to you. This way you can keep your lines new. Also if you do decide to breed papa to his offspring slowly after a couple breedings seasons, fertility and egg production will go down.

This simply is not true. Most people who breed successfully for show line breed which is to say they do not add "new blood" to their breeding program often if at all/
I have lie bred a strain of SC Rhode Islad Red Bantams for nearly 25 years w/o adding any "new blood'. My birds compete successfully against some of the best in the country. The hens lay well & the eggs hatch well. This yeat I did only 2 matings with a total of 7 hens. I hatched 125 chicks.

I have to agree with NYReds.

Line breeding has been practiced for 200+ yrs with out loss of fertility.

If you have a SQ roo, he can be used to breed several generations of offspring.

Emphasizing positive genetic traits is what most quality breeders are aiming for.
