Can anyone identify these the first one is supposed to be a claret the second is supposed to be a kelso how

would one tell

Telling them apart is a struggle, they all look very much alike. But I'll take a stab at them.

I think the first at the top is the Claret. The one at the bottom is a Kelso.

Unless you have had American game fowl for a lot of years and have a lot of experience with them you can't really tell. You will need to depend mostly on the person you got them from or someone that knows that person. I have been around the game fowl community for many years and still don't feel confident of my ability to tell them apart by looks alone. Breeding lines have been mixed together so much that a lot of them are simply American game fowl. Colors are not always indicators of what they are either. If you could find a long time cocker to help you, that would be ideal because they will have the experience with the various lines to help you the best. Otherwise, go by what the person you got them from, told you and go from there.

There’s many different strains of claret and kelso. Look them up and how they should come. Leg color, streamers, comb type etc… the claret looks a little light feather color but that doesn’t mean much while the yellow legged kelso looks fine too. If the person you got them from told you that’s what they are you’ll just have to trust them. Otherwise you’ll never really know.
