So we got a small flock of 6 Australorp's we had for about 5 years now. I went to my parents where they are kept and was carrying a new bag of feed to put in the storage container. I noticed the door to the run was open with a brick against it. Sure enough the chickens heard me and all came out of their coop and then the pen and swarmed my feet. I told my brother that you left the door open. He said ye he was letting them out. I always watched them when they were allowed out. But apparently he just lets them roam around while he goes back in and does whatever. I said, their going to get in the neighbors yard which is about 20 or 30 feet away. He told me they don't go their no more and that he had trained them. He claims that he trained them to stay out of the neighbors yard. They always use to before and I would have to get them away from the properly line.
Can chickens be trained o respect a property border? I was under the impression they couldn't. My brother had trained his dog years ago to fetch him beer out of the fridge. And our last dog he claims that he trained to herd the chicken back into the run. I never got to see it before my parents dog passed. But my parents said he did have the dog herding them back in. But did he train them to stay on our property? Is this possible? I'm very skeptical of it. I'm thinking well maybe cause its winter and no trees on the trees and plants along the border. Because they use to love going under the cover their. So is it possible he trained them to stay on our side of the property border?

Your brother sounds good at training animals! Chickens are very easily trained and I don’t think it’d be impossible to train them to stay in a certain area. Without a fence or some sort of marker it could be more difficult. Some people will tell you that they may not be trained and will eventually wander back over there. But I think if he watches them and reminds them, they’ll be okay.

The fence we share in back with our neighbors is short, only like 3.5 feet high maybe. At first our chickens would hop it and help themselves to the neighbor’s grass and berry bushes. I started sitting by the fence in a chair and chasing them away when they would jump on the fence, getting ready to hop over. Eventually they lost interest and now we don’t have issues except for maybe once or twice a summer those berries will look enticing enough to perch on the fence and eat them. I give them a quick reminder that isn’t okay and we don’t have anymore issues for a while again.

Also, welcome to the site!
