Can I transplant asparagus?

This spring I started asparagus in two separate areas. The first area got too weedy and not much came up. The second area did well but I have realized that it's too close to the rhubarb and needs to be moved.

So, now that I've weeded and redone the first bed so that it'll be better...can I dig up the asparagus from the second bed and move them into the first bed? All the asparagus is new plants--roots planted this spring.

I appreciate any advice.

You will do better if you wait until the plants are dormant. You'll have to dig really deep because the roots go way down. Asparagus transplants well. that's how most of us buy asparagus plants, as well developed bare roots.

Frankly, it would be easier to move the rhubarb.

Thanks. I thought the bareroots we buy were several years old--don't know why I thought that, just assumed that's how long it took to develop a mature plant.

I think the rhubarb would have equally large roots and I like where they are now, whereas I want the other place to have the asparagus. Looks like I'll be waiting till late fall?

I was looking into this also. My current asparagus bed is *I think* 4 years old and we just really got a good harvest this year. But, it's where our new house needs to go. I don't think I'll be able to wait for dormancy, everything I could find said that's the best time. So, if you're notunder any time constraints, I say wait for early spring. What I read said to use a pitchfork or similar to dig around all the roots so you don't sever them with a shovel. Then just lay out in trenches in your new area. Good luck!
