We've incidentally adopted a very sick bird with numerous problems, so we are treating her with several means currently. I need to know if these things are okay for her to take together. Can you put a bird on both Acidified Copper Sulfate AND have her on antibiotics too?

-One does of Ivermectin today, probably the only dose she will get
-Antibiotics administered today, 300 mg Clindamycin (meds we had in the cabinet but never used for another bird's subscription, wasn't needed for the other) Dosage says 2 pills per day for 10 days.
-Acidified Copper Sulfate won't come in until Tuesday, which is 4 days from now. Not sure if I should follow through with the 10 days of the antibiotic, or if she's not improving, to stop that and start the ACS instead.

I've got all healthy birds, this bird was picked up by a friend for us from out of state. She matched the breed we raise so we decided to get her. We didn't know she was so ill. (Wheezing, squeaking, bulge on crop) She is quarantined. Luckily she gets around pretty well and can run and whatnot... just don't want to make her worse or toxic from any bad treatments. I need to look into a different dewormer as well, as I heard Ivermectin doesn't work too well for worms anymore; just in case she has them.

And yes she is a duck, but I do believe this case would apply to pretty much all fowl if I'm not mistaken. We don't want to name her yet in case she takes a turn for the worst.

Hi,

Sorry about your beautiful duck being ill! :hugs

Whilst it's not good to throw so many things at once to a sick bird, you can with the ACS and antibiotics as they are both doing different things from one another and wouldn't contradict.

It's important not to stop the antibiotics even if they don't seem to be doing anything. You can just start the ACS when you get it, or wait a few days, your choice.

If you need info about how to administer the ACS, here's a good post explaining.

As that post notes too, you'll need to be sure to supplement probiotics for a couple of weeks when this regiment is all done.

I hope your duck gets over this fast!

This helps immensely, thank you!! Our feed contains probiotics, its New Country Organics duck feed. Should be suppliment her with more probiotics in some way after she finishes the ACS?

You're very welcome.

All feed has some probiotics in it, so when we say "give them probiotics," we mean in addition to whatever they're already getting. That can be via powders in their water (Hydro Hen or Sav-A-Chic are two such kinds, but there are dozens), a tablespoon or two of sugar-free yogurt (Greek is the best), or fermented things, like I ferment grains.

Alright, I'll be sure to have this on hand for after the treatment. One more question... Can antibiotics be administered at the same time as probiotics? It feels like a dumb question, but I dont know the answer so I have to ask... Lol.

They can be but I wouldn't as the probiotics could lessen the effect of the antibiotics. Those two, in essence, are fighting each other.

No question is ever dumb. I'm 64 years old and still ask questions. :hugs

I really like having Hydro Hen on standby since it also has electrolytes. While not a probiotic but a supplement, I still recommend having Nutri-drench as well. I personally use both when my birds need a little bit of a boost, during hot weather, and for new chick arrivals.
