Can you consume the meat of a chicken that had sour crop?

As the title says. We have a chicken with a crop issue that has been repeatedly improving and then getting worse. An impaction that we seemed to clear successfully, then turned into pendulous crop and now seeming sour. No treatments seem like they’ve helped so we’re at the point of considering culling.

And if the bird is safe to eat, are there any special considerations for culling when the chicken has had a crop issue? It would be our first time culling and processing a chicken so I wanted to make sure that there’s nothing I’m missing.

The only way you will be able to tell if the bird is relatively safe to eat is when you process it.

If the crop is full, then you will want to be careful when remove the internals, so the contents don't spill. Study your butchering book methods and/or videos so you understand the removal process.

Do take time to inspect the internals to ensure the bird was relatively healthy so you are confident that the meat is safe to consume. Of course, process, cool quickly, let rest and cook thoroughly.
