As the title says. We have a chicken with a crop issue that has been repeatedly improving and then getting worse. An impaction that we seemed to clear successfully, then turned into pendulous crop and now seeming sour. No treatments seem like they’ve helped so we’re at the point of considering culling.

And if the bird is safe to eat, are there any special considerations for culling when the chicken has had a crop issue? It would be our first time culling and processing a chicken so I wanted to make sure that there’s nothing I’m missing.

The only way you will be able to tell if the bird is relatively safe to eat is when you process it.

If the crop is full, then you will want to be careful when remove the internals, so the contents don't spill. Study your butchering book methods and/or videos so you understand the removal process.

Do take time to inspect the internals to ensure the bird was relatively healthy so you are confident that the meat is safe to consume. Of course, process, cool quickly, let rest and cook thoroughly.

I think my hen has one of these issues just not sure which. With the crop issue the hen is about 7 months old and has just stayed laying.a few weeks maybe. Then stopped suddenly its been a few weeks of no eggs. I guess I feel like I'll let nature run its course unless the bird changes for the worse or looks stressed. It its fine. Crop will be very big daily. It sounds like some of the pendulum crop. It's been 3 weeks of trying things. Has anyone had their bird with crop jerk their neck too some.

Yes, a hen with crop issues will sometimes jerk their neck trying to adjust the crop.

If she has Pendulous Crop, you may need to address that symptom according to the article below.

This thread you are posting in is from last year and pertains to Consuming Meat from a bird that had Sour Crop. You may want to start a thread of your own in the ER Forums, posting more information about symptoms along with photos or video if you need more help.
