After much research, especially here on this site, my fiance and I decided that bringing a few hens into our life would be a wonderful idea! We went out, found the best chicks for us and our family, and purchased four (2 Black Australorp & 2 Buffy Orpington). Well, I certainly should have done some more research on my City because I just found out that according to section 5-1, "farm animals" are not allowed in the city of Boca Raton.

I called zoning who informed me to call the city clerk. I called the city clerk and she informs me that in order to start the process I can write a letter and address it to the city council or the mayor. I am 100% new to everything involved in this, including the chickens. However, we have already fallen in love with these girls and do not want to give up on them just yet! I am going to put in some work and write this letter and if needed, I will attend the city council meeting which will be the next step.

What I was hoping to get here is some advice. Has anyone on this site ever written to city council or the mayor to get the law for chickens changed? If so do you have any advice on some pointers that I should bring up? Thank you so much!!

First, greetings and welcome to BYC. Congrats on your new chicken adventure. So sorry that local ordinances have brought you to us.

Many folks in many locations have done what you are in the process of doing. Many small towns and cities have now made it possible for folks to have back yard chickens. You will need to be careful though as many of the ordinances stipulate # of birds, no males, and property set back requirements to avoid bothering neighbors with noise/smell.

There are many online resources if you search. Good luck! Please browse around and make yourself at home!

Wow! Great info!!

I’ve was contemplating moving to Boca from Jersey since my recent divorce. Started researching the area, real estate, etc. until my friend informed me that livestock is not permitted. Considering I have 5 chickens and 2 ducks and would never give up my pets for anything other than the most extreme circumstance, I won’t be moving to Boca. So now I’m looking to find those areas nearby that do allow the keeping of horses and chickens etc. Unfortunately there’s only one area that I found so far but the properties start at 4 million. Aside from that there seem to be riding stables, equestrian centers, Feed stores livestock auction‘s all in Boca so how is that ?

Greetings and welcome to BYC! So glad you joined us. There is a huge difference between a business that pumps in ecodollars from sales taxes to a small home hobby in your backyard that pays nothing. Think about it. No income tax so they have o get your money somehow. anyway... Perhaps you'll take a moment or two and stop by the new member thread and post a quick intro so folks can get to know you and welcome you properly? https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/new-member-introductions.44/

There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. I recommend at least your state as most folks won't be able to figure out where if you put anything more specific (county, town, street, etc) by itself. Old folks like me :old will never remember & look there first. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!
