A black capped chickadee flew into our window and was laying on its back when we got to it. It is alive, but blinking a lot, breathing hard, and ruffled up. What can I do to help?

Nevermind, he just died.
Sorry to hear it, sounds like you were doing your best to help already. :hugs

When a bird hits my window and is stunned or knocked out enough for me to handle it.. I *usually* just protect them from other possible predators while they recover and regain their senses and mobility and fly away again on their own.

In the past, HPAI (highly pathenogenic avian influenza) wasn't on my radar the way it currently is. I would still suspect the heavy breathing and such that you describe likely to be from internal or neuroligical damage caused by the accident rather than the other way around. Still probably good to do thorough hand washing and take standard precautions to prevent any cross contamination to your personal flocks.

Sorry to hear this one passed away. Blinking a lot makes me think neurological damage which can be swift and severe when a tiny body gets trauma like that :(

For a bird that is truly poorly and injured after a window strike, the best thing to do is bring it to a wildlife rehabilitator.

Other times, if the bird is a little more responsive, it simply needs to be moved to a safe/quiet area to recover before flying off.
