My 3 year old Orpington bent down for a treat today and some clear fluid (not a large amount) came out of her mouth. When I picked her up I noticed she had some in her nostrils as well. Things of note:
Going through a heatwave and the high temp today was 93° F
She is alert, still has her voracious appetite
Loose stools, but that's typical for a day as hot as today
No coughing or sneezing apparent

Should I be concerned that she's ill? After 6 years of fairly mellow chicken ownership, I lost my favorite hen to sour crop last week so now I'm highly paranoid. Could it be water that she didn't fully swallow? None of the rest of the flock are displaying nasal discharge.

She should be okay. I've had that happen to my chicken (and duck) when it was around 90 degrees. I thinks its when they don't swallow, like you said, and or when their crop is full and they bend down, it just slips from the crop to their mouth. I'm sorry about your hen:hitI would make sure she has plenty of water, and keep an eye on her, especially because it was in her nostrils too
Best wishes!

Hi again.
I actually have a young pullet who is dripping saliva, like whenever she eats and drinks. I thought it was fine the little bit she did it, but it seems like she has to eat some to keep her liquid down. And its not even like she has her head below her neck more than normal, its like normal pecking and drinking ground level position. I got her a little over a week ago and I'm not sure on her exact age or breed but I believe she is a Blue Copper Maran around 2 months. I really hope its a girl but it might be a roo. Kinda pale still but getting more color back, and comb is starting to get big enough to flop over though. Any ideas since its not even too hot and its constant? Sorry I didn't make a new thread, I figured some might see this and could possibly answer yours and mine. Any help would be very appreciated, thank you!
