I have a 2.5yr old Wyandotte hen who wouldn't leave the coop yesterday. When I checked on her, I noticed that she is not opening one of her eyes. I have not seen any puss, so I'm wondering if she may have sustained an injury from another bird overnight. When I came to let the 8 ckns out of the coop that morning, I noticed one of them was impatiently flying around. I wonder if this might have caused an injury to her eye?

Maybe related, maybe not, this same Wyandoote is not moving much. She only stands, won't sit/lay down. She didn't seem to be eating or drinking. I gave her a warm epson salt bath today and started feeding her sugar water by droppeer. She will drink the drops from the dropper and a bit of grain/feed from our hands, but not much. Also, her neck seems a bit off-center, like she is leaning toward the open eye.

I checked for an stuck egg today, didn't feel anything, but produced a runny yellowish stool. The rest of the flock seems to be acting normal, but sometimes I hear squirty/watery sounding stools as I'm tending to them. I don't know what stools are considered normal or what is a concern...

The age of my flock varies from 2.5yrs to 8 months. They stopped laying eggs about 2-3 weeks ago, but seem to be molting. I have never dewormed or treated my flock with anything....didn't know that was even a thing until I started googling her symptoms.

Any idea how I can help my wyandotte hen?? Should I treat with Corid? Deworm? Something else?

What about the whole flock with runny stools? Do they need anything?

Thank you all for any help you can provide!!

Hi, and sorry about your hen.

For her eye, I would rinse it out with saline solution and see if you can see anything wrong with it, like a little puss, or something in there. Regardless, I'd put some Terramycin ointment or triple antibiotic ointment (without painkiller) in her eye a couple of times a day.

Do you have anyone that could do a fecal float test to check if she/they have worms?

Have your chickens all been there in your run or yard for many months or any new ones? That age shouldn't get coccidiosis if they've been outside for a length of time. It never hurts them to treat with Corid to be on the safe side, but then be sure to follow up with vitamins after it's done.

Molting can cause runny stools too though in some.

I find that probiotics helps clear up loose stools in chicks and chickens. They make powders for water or Greek yogurt is good too.

How is she today? I agree with @Debbie292d that Corid won't hurt. Besides the eye, is her face swollen? Can you please post a picture of her face? Is she moving today? I know it is time-consuming, but i would make sure she continues to eat and drink. Hydration first, then food. I find that things can go from bad to worse fast without the food and water.

Do you see any bubbles or foam in the eye that she keeps closed? Are there any ammonia fumes inside the coop? Molting is a very stressful time, and if one is going to become, ill, that is a common time. Is her crop emptying overnight? Can you post a picture of her typical droppings? I would take her aside and offer some soft cooked egg and watery chicken feed. I would not give any more soaks, since that can push a weak hen over the edge.
