Hello all! I'm hoping to learn what may have happened to my 4 1/2 year old Buff Orpington hen. I have read and learned much on this site and thought my hen "Mona" may have had water belly except she didn't feel squishy but rather firm. No obstructions in the vent were detected. After intensive care for about 2 weeks and no improvement, I reluctantly dispatched her. Inside I found these translucent nodules ranging in size from small grapes to plum. She must have had 20-30 of these and they were liquid filled. Clear in color. Could these be some kind of tumors? Hoping someone my have run into this before. Thanks!

I'm sorry about your hen.

Did you happen to take any photos?

Clear in color nodules...did they look like any of these?

I do necropsies on my hens who die, and have had quite a few surprises over the years. One 9 year old bantam hen who died last year had water belly (ascites) for several weeks. When I performed a simple home necropsy, she had about 8 egg shaped fluid filled cysts. I wish I had taken pictures, because I haven’t seen them in other posts. Post any pictures if you have them for comments.

Thank you for your reply Wyorp. The second link, looks identical to what I found inside Mona. Some sort of cysts. I should have taken some pics but didn't think of it at the time. I pierced a few and there was clear fluid. I can see how this caused pressure on her organs, making breathing labored. She seemed alert and ate and drank well but lost weight and at the end, couldn't walk. Thanks for the info.
