Ok so I plan on making a PVC chicken waterer, I have horizontal nipples and all the pieces I need. I'm wondering if I should worry about the sealant I choose to use. I have waterproof silicone, as well as heavy duty PVC cement. I'm wondering if anyone has made their own, what they used. Should I be worried about toxins? I'd hate to poison them. Let me know any thoughts, opinions or advice welcome 😊

Yes. Don't use either of those.

Silicone Caulk is not gluing PVC pipe and fittings together.
Grey PVC Adhesive/Sealant is for gluing together the Grey PVC used for electrical conduit.

Use Purple Primer to clean your pipe. Then use either Christies "Wet & Dry" or "Hot Blue" from Oatey. I prefer the Hot Blue. Both are safe for potable water contact if you wanted to drink from it, both hold up to abuse (they are frequently used for pool fittings), they have a decent working time, and they are a little more permissive of imperfect connections - that is, them minimize DIY errors.

You can use the clear "all purpose" cement - that's still used for well pumps and the like, but slather it on, you aren't applying nail polish. Both sides, then push the pipe and fitting together, and twist. HOLD about 30 seconds - or it will try and push itself apart.

NOW you are good.
